Two of the most important parts of the eye are the retina (a layer of cells that use light to send visual information to the brain) and the vitreous (a gel-like substance that fills the middle portion of the eye). If problems arise with either the retina or the vitreous, a procedure called a vitrectomy may be needed.

All of these medical conditions can cause vision loss and, if not treated, some can even lead to blindness. During a vitrectomy, the ophthalmologist uses small instruments to cut the vitreous and suction it out, and then performs other needed retinal repairs. In some cases, a vitrectomy can restore lost vision.
After the procedure, patients usually go home the same day. Pain relievers can help ease the discomfort as the eye may feel a little sore and, in some cases, an eye patch may need to be worn for a day or so. Antibiotics might also be prescribed to help prevent infection.
